Diagnostic Assessments at Learning Lane - What to Expect
At Learning Lane: Language & Literacy Clinic, our diagnostic process begins with your very first conversation with us. During the initial intake call, we’ll talk with you about your child and the reasons you're seeking support. This helps us determine whether our services are a good fit for your child’s needs. If we decide to move forward, we’ll send you intake paperwork to complete and schedule a parent interview to gather more detailed background information in preparation for the evaluation.
Based on your concerns and our clinical expertise, we will design a personalized assessment plan tailored to your child. Our goal is to gain a clear understanding of your child’s learning profile—their strengths as well as any areas where support or intervention may be helpful. Depending on their situation, the evaluation may include assessments in areas such as:
Speech production
Receptive and expressive language
Word retrieval
Cognitive processing
Decoding (reading skills)
Encoding (spelling)
Reading comprehension
Written expression
We offer two types of evaluations:
Speech and language evaluations, which are completed in a single three-hour session.
Comprehensive speech, language, and literacy evaluations, which take place over two three-hour sessions.
Additional testing time may be added if needed to ensure we gather a complete and accurate picture. All evaluations are conducted in person to maintain the highest standards of clinical accuracy.
Once testing is complete, we carefully score, interpret, and analyze the results across all assessed areas. We’ll then schedule a parent feedback meeting to review our findings, discuss any diagnoses, and provide treatment recommendations. During this conversation, we can also guide you on potential next steps, including school-based supports such as Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) or 504 plans. A score summary will be provided for your records at this time.
Finally, we will craft a comprehensive diagnostic report that outlines your child’s unique learning strengths, patterns, and areas of need. This report is designed to be shared with schools and other professionals to support effective intervention planning and ensure your child receives the individualized support they deserve.
